History

Many of the current squad first joined as minis under the age of 7. As Under 11's the team won their first festival at Harlow and repeated the feat as Under 12's, adding the Datchworth trophy to their role of honour. A great 2003/4 season as Under 12's was concluded in May 2004 when the squad went on tour to Jersey (and won several games!). The briefcase tour was named after Russell's case, which mysteriously kept going missing just at the most in-opportune moments!

Then as Under 13's the team grew to such a size that two teams were formed, the first team under the title Welwyn Whirlwinds and the development team called the Welwyn Falcons. The highlight was a tour to Cornwall and the defeat of our hosts...... the tour became known as the Snakebite Tour when coach Keith had to be airlifted to hospital after he tried to pick up an adder!!!

As Under 14's we played our first ever league games in Division 2 and 4 and finished mid-table after a series of injuries to key players and as Under 15's we consolidated our position and enjoyed a tour of Ireland.

And then our finest hour came when on tour in southern Ireland. In April 2007 we became the first ever Welwyn team to put points on the board against Munster - first a penalty and then a try - and in celebrating the local pub had to order in an extra keg of Guinness!!!!!

In 2009 we toured Biarritz and Northern Spain in glorious sunshine, played on the best ever artifical pitch in Ordizia and were treated to the best hospitality ever whilst admiring Basque nationalist grafitti in the club!

2009/10 sees the U17's merge into the Welwyn Colts and start to play senior rugby for the first time..............but going back in time we have Tony Wesley to thank - he helped form the Welwyn mini and junior section in 1973 from which we grew.

Famous Welwyn juniors include Steve Bates and Joe Worsley.
